Reasons why people don't use real nappies

The number of parents using real nappies is increasing, currenly about 15%, compared with only 5% a few years ago, so the word is getting around. However, many parents still do not consider real nappies. There are a number of reasons for this including:

• lack of awareness of alternatives to disposables
• perception that reusable nappies means“old-fashioned” terry squares, pins and sweaty plastic pants
• the belief that laundering used nappies is hard work
• the belief that disposables are more convenient and must be better
• the belief that alternatives must be more costly
• the initial investment in alternatives compared with the “hidden” weekly spend on disposables
