Why choose cloth nappies?
Parents choose cloth nappies because they are easy to use, save you money, they are eco-friendly, hygienic, safe, comfy and they look great! Here's more:
they SAVE YOU MONEY…
A baby uses 6,000 to 7,000 nappies from birth to potty. Disposables will cost between £700 and £1200 per baby . A cloth nappy system can cost as little as £75 and no more than £400. Including laundering costs, this represents a saving of £400 to £900 for your first baby and of course you will save even more for subsequent children! We even offer an easy payment plan so you can build up your cloth nappy collection monthly to spread the initial cost. If you want to save even more, then use washable wipes instead of the throw away ones that cost between 2p and 4p each. Learn more about washable wipes on our "hints and tips" page.
they're HYGIENIC…
You don't have to handle poo – just drop a biodegradable liner down the toilet where the sewage system deals with it effectively. Isn't that more healthy than having festering faeces lurking in your rubbish bin until collection day? It is actually against WHO guidelines to deposit human faeces in landfill, yet that is still where most soiled disposable nappies end up, posing a significant threat to public health.
Did you know that we throw away 8 million disposable nappies every day in the UK? The Isle of Wight landfills about 1,500 tons every year. Cloth nappies have to be washed with detergent, but they are still a much greener option. You can wash a cloth nappy 200 times with the amount of water needed to manufacture just one disposable nappy. Research shows that disposable nappies use 3.5 times as much energy, 8 times as much non-regenerable raw materials and 90 times as much renewable material as reusable nappies. You can further decrease the environmental impact of your cloth nappies by choosing to line dry, using eco-friendly detergent and an energy efficient washing machine.
they're COMFY…
Do you prefer paper underwear or cotton? Why should your baby feel differently? Soft cotton or fleece is nicer on the skin than paper or plastic and fits much better so you get fewer leaks and modern nappy covers let skin breathe. The last few years have seen a vast increase in the variety of styles, colours and patterns. Increasingly cloth nappies are becoming a fashion and lifestyle choice as well as an eco and economic one.
they're SAFE …
Cloth nappies don't rely on chemicals – they're totally natural. The long term effects of sodium polyacrylate (the absorbent gel used in disposables) next to a baby's thin, sensitive skin is unknown and it was banned in tampons in 1985. Surprisingly, the use of chemicals in disposable nappies is currently not subject to any government regulation or independent testing.
